New router for 3G wireless sharing

Up until now, subscribing to a 3G mobile broadband service has been a solitary affair. Plug your dongle into your laptop or PC and start surfing. One dongle, one computer – nothing could be more straightforward. But what if you want to share your 3G internet access amongst several computers?

Fortunately,  network hardware manufacturer Billion, have made 3G sharing cheap and easy to facilitate.

The BiPAC7402GXL (catchy name, huh) is on the face of it a standard ADSL router with all the features you’d expect these days including:

  • ADSL2/2+ connection for speeds of up to 24Mbps via a phone line
  • 4 ethernet ports
  • 802.11g wireless access point with WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK
  • SOHO and SPI firewall with DoS prevention
  • 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch
  • The real USP for this device however is a built in USB port which allows you to connect your 3G USB dongle from Vodafone, O2, Three, T-Mobile etc and start sharing your mobile broadband HSDPA connection with other users via wireless or ethernet. Application for this type of router are many and varied. As you don’t have to rely on a wired ADSL line you could:

  • create your own ‘go anywhere’ wireless hotspot
  • use at conferences and exhibitions
  • setup group meetings/collaborations
  • The 3G USB connection also acts as a fail-safe backup if you already have an ADSL line connected.
Billion have priced the 7402GXL very keenly at £75 + VAT.
