Fixed-line broadband providers under threat?

There’s no doubt about it. Mobile broadband is here to stay. It’s still in its infancy but already commands a fair share of the overall broadband market. Attention is now turning on fixed-line broadband providers to see how they will cope with what might prove to be the biggest threat to their share of the market.

Consumers are increasingly craving flexibility. Mobile broadband fills that hole for many. According to the most recent survey conducted by YouGov, 1 in 8 UK consumers have replaced their fixed-lines for mobile broadband. And with the price of mobile broadband offers as low as £10 a month, this trend might be set to continue.

YouGov also found that 5% of consumers who have both fixed-line and mobile broadband were considering dropping the former altogether in the next 12 months.

For all its strengths, mobile broadband does obviously have its drawbacks (such as sluggish upload connection speeds). However, with mobile broadband technology being so young, this situation may soon change.
