Ofcom Reports Huge Rise in Mobile Broadband Sales

The UK telecoms watchdog, Ofcom, has reported that the use of mobile broadband has gone through the roof since February this year. Between then and June, sales have risen from 69,000 a month to almost double that at a whopping 133,000 a month.

There are several reasons for this trend in consumer buying behaviour. More people have laptops as they are getting increasingly cheaper to buy; and with some mobile broadband packages available at £10 a month, it’s cheaper than quite a few ADSL broadband packages on the market. This might explain why of the 2 million consumers that use mobile broadband in the UK, 75% use it at home. Add the fact that mobile broadband is also a lot less complicated to set up, plus the absence of an installation fee.

Fixed-line broadband providers better watch out – they may have a bit of a fight on their hands in the future as more and more consumers opt for mobile broadband on the go …and at home.

I would say one of the advantages people find is not requiring a home telephone line. More people are opting to use just their mobile phone. And the installation of a telephone line is very expensive, especially when just used for internet.
