The GSM Association (GSMA) has predicted that mobile broadband will achieve speeds of up to 100Mbps in certain parts of the world as early as 2010. Known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, GSMA forecasts that Japan and South Korea could be the first recipients, followed by Europe in 2012.
The association’s director also commented that, in theory, LTE can reach a speed of 186Mbps (in ideal settings).
This comes as BT announces its plans to invest £1.5 million in improving its broadband fibre optic network. It is thought that LTE mobile broadband, (also called 4G) might come into fruition before BT completes its improvement program. What impact this may have on the fixed-line industry is yet to be seen, but it’s thought that the competition is likely to massage the level of demand upwards as well as encourage new technology to push its way into the market.
