Ericsson F3607gw -3G HSDPA Mobile Broadband Modem

The Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson has come up with a simple solution to a potential problem faced by many mobile broadband providers.
Laptops with built-in 3G wireless broadband modems are often given away free or heavily subsidised as a way to hook customers into lengthy mobile broadband packages. But what happens if someone decides to stop paying their monthly subscription? Easy, says Ericsson, you send a remote command to shut down the computer, making it impossible to turn on!

The Death Switch
The new F3607gw 3G mobile broadband modem utilizes Intel’s Anti-Theft Protection Technology. This means the network can send a SMS to the modem which will instruct the processor to shut down and prevent any further usage until a unlock code is received. Could this herald the start of Big Brother tactics by the mobile operators? It’s not certain if they would resort to such draconian measures but I wouldn’t be surprised in this current global recession.

More tricks up the sleeve
The built in GPS capabilities combined with HSDPA 3G wireless broadband allow the F3607gw to offer a host of other services. Such location based applications include:

  • geo-fencing: companies can monitor and manage their employees data usage within geographical boundaries
  • content push services: receive real-time location aware information such as traffic updates, weather reportsand public safety warnings

The modem will function across HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE networks and offer a unique “wake on wireless” function. This allows enhanced security and remote remote power on via the 3G network.

Expect to see a release before June 2009.
