Mobile Wi-Fi Turns Your 3G Connection Into a Portable Wifi Hotspot
Just in time for Christmas, UK mobile network 3 has announced it’s latest innovative product. Mobile WiFi aka MiFi ® enables you to share the network’s 3G mobile broadband connection over a Wi-Fi link.
How Does It Work?
A small battery powered wireless router is included when you sign up to Mobile WiFi. No configuration is necessary, just pop in a 3 UK SIM card and switch on the modem to create your own portable Wifi hotspot.
What’s New About Mi-Fi?
Whilst you can buy routers that can distribute a 3G connection over WiFi, none of the currently available solutions offer MiFi’s battery powered portability and zero configuration.
How Much Will It Cost?
You’ll only be able to use the service when you take out a new mobile broadband subscription. There will be two MiFi packages available on it’s launch.
- ‘Broadband 5GB 1 month’ – For £15/ month you get 5GB worth of data. The MiFi modem will cost you £69.99 on top of this.
- ‘Ready to Go’ – For a one-off payment of £99.99 you get the MiFi modem and 3GB worth of data that can be used over a 3 month period. After this you can use the modem on a Pay As You Go basis.
Who Is It For?
MiFi is a convenient solution for anyone who wants easy wireless broadband on the go. It will appeal to anyone wanting an easy ‘wires free’ solution. No need to install drivers for your dongle or use third party software.
The number of mobile devices with wifi capability is growing. As well as laptops and smartphones -Playstation, XBox and Wii consoles owners could find Mifi useful. Mobile WiFi can also be used in impromptu meetings, or situations where more that one device need to access the internet.
Whilst it’s a great innovation in the world of mobile broadband, we’ll have to wait and see if consumers are willing to ditch their dongle and embrace the world of MiFi
Mobile Wifi will be available from 17th September from 3, and in 3 Stores nationwide from 18th September.

If it offers convenience and the price is right, can’t see why it may not be a fad for a while.
