Mobile operator 02 has successfully achieved a peak download rate of 150Mbps in a new trial in the UK into LTE, the next generation mobile wireless technology. The trial, held in 02 headquarters in Slough, is a joint effort between parent company Telefonica and Huawei, the Chinese hardware manufacturer.
Derek Manus, Chief Technology Officer Of 02 UK said, “We are pleased to collaborate with Huawei on this LTE trial, which will allow us to better understand this emerging technology and prepare us in offering our customers next generation mobile broadband services in the future,”
LTE – The Future Of Mobile is 4G
LTE, also known as 4G, ( although if you want to be pedantic, it’s technically 3.9G ,the last revision of 3G) is expected to succeed our current 3G technology which has a theoretical maximum download rate of 7.2Mbps in the UK at present. The trial comes as good news for many who feel the UK mobile voice and data infrastructure needs to drastically improve to keep up with the ever growing demand for mobile broadband services.
Tim Watkins, a VC at Huawei ”Mobile operators are struggling to cope with the huge demand for data services, Long Term Evolution technology will be able to handle up to 20 times as much data and allow more bandwidth-hungry applications.”
Telefonica are planning to rollout LTE in several countries across the globe in the next couple of years including ….. . However , we’re unlikely to see any sign of an LTE network for consumers in the UK until at late 2010 at the very least.
Compare this to Scandinavian mobile operator Teliasonera and it’s clear that we’ve got some catching up to do. This week Telisonera launched the world’s first commercial LTE network in Oslo and Stockholm.
