2G still rules the world -but not for much longer

The vast majority of mobile revenues still come from legacy 2G voice services, currently accounting for around 90% of mobile subscriptions. However this is expected to drop off to 70% by 2012,  and by 2014, half of the world’s 6.7 billion subscribers are expected to be using  3G, 3.5G and 4G mobile networks.

Mobile Data Fuelling Demand

In a statement Informa said “The explosion of mobile broadband has renewed the significance of the network itself as operators market their mobile broadband services around the speed and geographical range of their network”

Revenues from mobile data are expected to increase from $208 billion to $330 billion by 2013, partly fuelled by the popularity of the iPhone and other smartphone devices. Future developments such as the Android platform and LTE  networks are also expected to boost mobile data revenues significantly.

Informa chief research officer Mark Newman said ”The backdrop to this transition in the industry is the fact that the Internet has started to dominate the landscape for new services and applications,” said , “and telecoms operators are under increasing pressure to remain valuable and relevant in the eyes of their end-users.”
