Question by Tim T: Can you use a mobile broadband dongle to also connect to your wireless router?
I know the mobile dongle has an inbuilt modem, but could you double up and use it to conect to a wireless router when not using mobile broadband?

No. Mobile broadband is a completely different connection than WiFi.

Actually, yes. Depending on the phone of course. If you have a an Iphone or a Blackberry such as myself. I have the Blackberry 8120 Pearl, and it has built in Wifi for me to conect to a wireless network. If you do have a blackberry, look for the connections icon, thn you will see wireless. or setup new wireless and it gives you stp by step instructions. I have the BB data plan that gets picked up my my mobile antenna, but, if i have no signal, I can still connect to a wifi router in range.

Software such as VZAccess Manager for Verizon networks and Dell ControlPoint Connection Manager have the ability to detect and utilize both your broadband adapter and WiFi adapter, almost giving the illusion of having one access point to connect to different types of networks. However, you do need separate devices one for each connection. The software just gives you one central location to manage each connection from.

A mobile broadband dongle is separate from a WiFi adapter. You would need a WiFi dongle. I haven’t seen any yet that are microchip size. Most that I have seen are stick based that either has a base or you plug it directly to the computer.

I would recommend getting a B|G|N wireless adapter if you go to places that have N networks. However most of the places are generally 54G such as in Starbucks but having an N helps as it has range extension.
