Question by bovver_boi: If I have usb mobile broadband stick and contract, Can I connect to two computers in my house at the same time?
I have just ordered a mobile 3 broadband stick, we have really good network in this area, its really strong. As it is so strong is it possible to connect two computers at the same time in the flat without a router, like if the other computer has a wireless card or airport installed and the other has the broadband stick?

Unfortunately not. Even if the signal is strong, it does not work like a wireless router.

1) Three is selling a router (for about 80 quid) which would do this but there’s no need.

2) Assuming you are using Windows on one machine, then you can search the help text for ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which allows the PC with the USB wireless modem connected to it to act as a router and allow your other PC(s) to access the net that way.

I do that here. I’ve a small LAN (3 Windows PCs, some linux boxes and iMac too). One Win XP machine has the USB modem, and there’s an ethernet cable into a hub, to allow access for the other PCs.

In this set-up I’ve set my ethernet port on the XP machine to have an IP address of 10.0.0.111 and on the other machines (10.0.0.xxx) I’ve set them to use 10.0.0.111 as the gateway address.

So yes, it can be done – so long as the two PCs can interact (file sharing etc) (using ethernet cable, powerline adaptors or wireless) at present.

Cant do it.For you to share a connection, you need a router which enable you to share the connection.Unless, you can try using the card on the laptop, connect the laptop via ethernet to the other pc/laptop therefore using one pc as rouyter.I have never tried it that way but it is worth trying.
